See the Chicago Tribune article.
We're lucky. We're really lucky. We only have streams running through our basement, not standing water. We don't really have anything valuable in our basement, and what is worth keeping was already up on boards or shelves. Our sump pump is working...our neighbor's stopped working. Yeah, our yard is flooded and we do have water in our basement.
But compared to a lot of people, we're doing pretty well.
One of our across-the-street neighbor's was fine until the cistern underground next to his house broke and started pushing water into his basement. Another neighbor down the block discovered that his house didn't even come with a sump-pump in it. And yet another neighbor recently completed some very very nice basment renovations and just lost about $10,000 worth of stuff to flood damage.
We'd had plans to save up money for a vacation for our 10th anniversary. It looks like we'll be saving up to have a company come in and do some waterproofing of our basement...and that will cost a bundle...because it's not just simple cracks in the foundation. We've got seepage all around AND a little bubbling 'font' (for lack of a better word) right in the middle of the basement floor.
